Antique American Clocks August 2022
MO-16. $50
C. & L.C. Ives “Patent Brass Eight Day Clock”, 1830-1837. Although most of the label is gone, enough is present in conjunction with the characteristic movement to identify the makers. The case is 38 inches tall on ball feet front and back, with an attractive carved splat. The full columns are veneered in figured
walnut or mahogany with intricately carved capitals. The sides of the case are veneered with mahogany; there are numerous missing
pieces on the front, and the doors lack veneer altogether. The dial glass is modern, not well-secured in place; the middle glass,
normally a mirror, is a replacement with an eagle decal on the front of the glass; the lower glass is period but may not be original
to the clock and has been redone in a non-original style. Phew! The wooden dial with cut-out is highly decorated with
gesso and gilt, but dirty, the pull-up mirror must be original as it has lost most of its reflective backing. The minute hand
is an acceptable replacement. The large strap-brass movement is unsigned, as is typical; it is running and striking loudly on
the iron bell. It is driven by two period 8-day weights; as noted, the label is mostly missing. Refurbish or part out? You decide. $50-$150.
Don’t want the weights? Get at $10 refund for 30-hour weights, or $25 for 8-day weights. Let
me know on your bid sheet in the “Instructions” section.
