Antique American Clocks January 2022
255. $100
Riley Whiting carved column & cornice shelf clock, 1828-1835. Whiting died in 1835, but prior
to that was a major player in the early days of wooden works tall case and later, shelf clocks, as found here. This refinished
case is 34.5 inches tall with old dial glass (but newer putty) and an early twentieth century mirror. The wooden dial board
is clean and colorful in the spandrels, the hands are period. Note that the left wing of the splat eagle is a replacement. There is a 30-hour wooden movement inside that is running but not striking. There is a good label; note that Wm. A. Whiting
in Buffalo is credited for casing the clocks. $100-$200.
