Antique American Clocks January 2022
228. $100
Nicholas Muller “Sensation” iron-front, ca. 1880. This 14.75-inch iron-front is unusual because it
holds a movement stamped Nicholas Muller Sons & Co., indicating that he was not simply providing the case for other clock sellers. I have not encountered that before, but Arlyn Rath (Nicholas Müller – Horologist Extraordinare) notes that Muller used movements labeled
N.M.S or N. Muller & Sons. Although this model (#199) is not described in her book, it is shown in Ly’s book on Kroeber
clocks on page 255 and is labeled “Sensation”. The glass is a replacement, the paper dial may be original, as are the hands. The 8-day, time-and-strike movement is running and striking on a nickel bell. It’s hard to tell what the finish looked like
when it was new; there is some indication that the leaves were red or brown. $100-$200.
