Antique American Clocks January 2022

Wm. Gilbert Clock Co. “Regulator No. 3”, ca. 1875. A gorgeous clock that you rarely see; this one
is fully restored. The 50-inch case (with bottom finial) is veneered in rosewood and has been polished to a beautiful finish. The weight shield panels appear to be solid walnut. Some of the finials are reproductions, but they match the original catalog
illustrations; the applied carvings are the original wood composites. Note the leaf applique to the bottom of the dial board. The door glass is old and wavy. The dial is high gloss paper on the original dial pan, the hands are correct. The weight-driven,
8-day, time-only movement has a dead-beat escapement and a seconds bit, which is not used in any of the examples I’ve found, including
the 1875 catalog illustration. It is running steadily, driven by an old iron weight. The pendulum is correct. There
is a small label on the back. Two sales listed in the Antique Clocks Price Guide over the last 20 years, most recently at RO
Schmitt’s in 2010 for $1898. Bunch Auctions sold one in 2015 for $800. We’ll start this one at $750. $750-$1500.
