Forestville Mfg. Co. “miniature acorn”, 1835-1839. A 20.25-inch case veneered in rosewood
on the sides, and a laminated door with alternating light and dark wood. There is a good patina on the polished finish. Both glasses are old, but the tablet was repainted on old glass to replicate the pattern on the original but broken tablet. The contoured metal dial holds the original paint, with a faint signature above the center post. Both hands are correct and
likely original. The 8-day, time-and-strike, double-fusee movement is signed Forestville M.F.G.Co., Bristol. It is running
nicely but the strike hammer arm is just a bit misaligned to the pins and is not lifting the hammer. The wooden fusees are covered
with a brass sheath; according to information provided by an earlier appraiser (letter included with the clock), wooden fusees were
used by J.C. Brown up until about 1842; this, along with the solid escape wheel suggests that this clock was made prior to 1842. There are remnants of a green label behind a plastic sheet. AAC sold a miniature acorn last July for $7600; it had an original
tablet and better label. $3500-$6000.
