Antique American Clocks January 2022
111. $175
Seth Thomas “Dayton”, ca. 1893. A “City Series” clock that my mentor built his reputation
on as someone who, after many years, managed to own every City Series clock (and name some as well). This Dayton is in a 16-inch
oak case with an old finish; the glass is wavy, the dial looks to have been repainted with the ST logo and name, the hands are correct. The rugged 8-day, time-and-strike lyre movement is signed and running, striking on a cathedral gong; there is a Seth Thomas label
on the door to access the pendulum and key. The Dayton is an uncommon model; the most recent sale I can find was at RO Schmitt’s
in 2018 for $275, also in oak. $175-$250.
