Timby’s Solar Time Piece, 1863-1865.  Approximately 600 of these unusual clocks were made in Saratoga Springs, NY by Theodore R. Timby.  The 28-inch case is mahogany or walnut with an old and possibly original finish; the three finials are correct.  The globe is in good condition with some soiling, labeled “Joslin’s Terrestrial Globe”, dated 1860.  It appears that someone painted the ceiling without moving this $5000 antique off the mantel.  The paint splatter is minimal, but evident on close inspection.  The jeweled balance wheel movement is thought to have been made by LaPorte Hubbell and winds in back, turning the globe once every 24 hours and running for 8 days.  Above the globe is the time window, with a paper dial that rotates behind the small glass with the globe, a pointer indicating the time.  The lower window in front of the movement shows the minute wheel; it has been repainted and somewhat crudely renumbered.  The door flips down and there is no glass in the window.  The clock is running and the globe, and both dials, are turning.  These clocks are considered highly collectable; AAC sold two last summer for $4625 and $3000.
