Antique American Clocks January 2022
61. $175
Birge, Peck & Co. “Extra 8 day brass clock” 1849-1859. Just over 32 inches with
good mahogany veneer all around; the dial glass is original, the middle tablet redone (paint and appliques) on new glass, and a period
eagle tablet at the bottom. The painted metal dial has been varnished but is clean, if yellowed. Replacement hands. The unsigned strap-brass 8-day, time-and-strike movement is running and striking, driven by two old iron weights. A great label
inside, with “The Breeze” locomotive train. This was John Birge’s last company, which merged with J.C. Brown Enterprises after
John retired at the age of 70 and died 7 years later. He was one of the more successful clockmakers of his time. $175-$250.
