Antique American Clocks January 2022
54. $250
English tall case clock, late 1800’s. A 91-inch oak case with cherry, walnut, and mahogany
veneer on the front. There are two half-columns on the hood door, flanked by two full columns. The door glass is modern. The painted dial is a good fit to the frame and it is possible that it is original to this case. It is signed “R. B. Brookhouse,
Newcastle” and includes a moon dial and a calendar dial; I do not know if either is working, but there is considerable peeling and
chipping to the moon dial. The 8-day, time-and-strike movement is running and striking, but the movement is perched precariously
on the case and needs to be secured. It is driven by two large iron weights. The pendulum bob is rusted, suspended on
a flat iron strip but looks original. The case has been cleaned nicely, but the sides look sun-bleached. There were never
finials on top. An attractive example. $250-$750.
