Antique American Clocks July 2021
253. $200
English bracket clock, ca. 1860. A 21-inch gothic case veneered in mahogany with a well-polished
finish. There is a convex beveled glass in a brass bezel over the dial. This clock has several issues: The
veneer is peeling on the back and some top edge pieces are missing; the center steeple is damaged at the top. Most importantly,
the movement is not original to this case; the dial does not fit without gaps, and you can see that the brackets have been bent to
adjust the movement to the case depth. The painted dial is signed “Francis Harrison, 96 Broad St, London” but is crackled and
chipping, with losses along the edges. The back door is missing its glass and the latch does not work. The brass plate,
double-fusee movement is unsigned; it is running and the strike is setting but not being released. That is probably an easy
fix. It should count the hours on the nickel bell. The case is good, the movement is valuable, but this might be a marriage
that should be dissolved. It comes with a matching shelf. $200-$400.
