Antique American Clocks July 2021
247. $150
Chauncey Jerome octagon lever ship’s bells clock, 1845-1855. The case is 10.75 inches across with
good rosewood veneer all around; the dial is 8 inches in diameter with the original paint, now flaking, and the original glass in
the brass bezel. The hands are new old stock. The movement is signed “Chauncey Jerome New Haven Conn USA”; it runs a bit
and stops when it feels like it. I think it runs for 8 days but the bell-strike spring is much smaller. It strikes “ship’s
bells”, a system with 8 strikes over four hours, which then repeats. If you are a on a ship’s crew it lets you know how much
longer you are on duty. I’ve not encountered this on an octagon lever before and can’t find a sales example; in fact, a strike
on an octagon lever is unusual. No label on the back. $150-$300.
