Antique American Clocks July 2021
220. $4500
English miniature lantern alarm clock, 1753-1779. The inscription reads “Edn Smith Bury From London
N.361”. I believe this corresponds to Edmund Smith, a watch and clockmaker from London who set up a shop in Bury St. Edmonds
in 1753 (Bury St. Edmonds is in Suffolk northeast of London). The clock is 7.25 inches tall with a single hand and an alarm
ring on a tarnished dial, with a boss above with the maker name inscribed. There is a crown wheel escapement on top and an attached
pendulum, and two side doors; the alarm strikes on the bell on top. A lead weight and a smaller iron weight drive the time and
alarm. I did not test it. An old shelf is included. Skinner’s sold a very similar example in 2013 for $6600. $4500-$6000.
