Antique American Clocks July 2021
195. $125
Wm. Gilbert Clock Co. “Curfew”, ca. 1879. This model can be found on page 312 of Ly’s book
on Gilbert clocks. It stands 24 inches tall with the finial, which looks correct but does not match the catalog illustration. The case is walnut and has been refinished beautifully; note the fully turned and carved columns on each side, and the carved base. The glass is old but may be a replacement; the catalog shows it without a stenciled glass. The dial is newer glossy paper, the
bezel nickel, the hands not quite right replacements. The 8-day time-and-strike movement is signed Gilbert but is a replacement,
as it has an alarm lever and there is no alarm, nor evidence of an alarm in this case. The strike chain spring is sprung but
may just be a misaligned click stop; it strikes on a cathedral gong. The time side is running, regulated by a fancy Gilbert
pendulum. No label, inside or out. A better-quality parlor clock. $125-$175.
