Antique American Clocks July 2021
182. $300
Waterbury Clock Co. “Regulator No. 2” ca. 1881. A 36-inch case veneered in rosewood with a
beautiful finish. The dial glass is original, the lower glass a replacement. The ‘Regulator’ decal is not shown in catalog
illustrations, the carving at the bottom is shown in the 1881 catalog image, whereas a different carving is shown on the 1891 illustration
(Ly, Waterbury Clocks & Watches, page 173). The metal dial has been repainted and the hands are correct; note the seconds
bit. The “A-frame” movement is not shown in Ly’s books on Waterbury clocks, but it is found in other examples of this model;
a solid plate movement is noted for the later edition of the No. 2. The movement runs 8 days and is driven by two weights (double
wind). The weights here are filled brass shells and may well be original. There is a weight shield with a black and gold
label behind the pendulum; note that the clock must hang vertically to allow for the pendulum to swing unobstructed. It is running
without issue. This is not a common model; the most recent sale I can find was for $350 at Fontaine’s earlier this year. $300-$600.
