Antique American Clocks July 2021
168. $100
Boston Clock Co. black marble tandem-wind mantel clock, 1884-1894. I cannot find a model name for
this clock. The slate case is 9 inches tall by 14 inches wide with a dull finish but no chips or cracks. There are colored
marble inserts on the sides of the front and in a diamond on the base; there also are gilded incisings with good color. The
decorated porcelain dial is marked “_ Stowell & Co.” with wear to the lettering; there is a large opening to view the platform
lever movement. The bezel holds a flat beveled glass. The 8-day time and half-hour strike movement is signed and running,
striking on cue; it uses the BCC signature tandem wind mechanism where you wind both the time-and-strike by turning the key in opposite
directions. A very nice example and likely a good timekeeper. Similar models have sold of late for $100-$200.
