Antique American Clocks July 2021
165. $500
B & L (Baume & Lezard?) lyre wall clock. The 32-inch case is mahogany or darkly stained
walnut with brass ornamentation on a lyre shaped case with the pendulum suspended from the top and regulated at the bottom by an inverted
crutch. The sculptured and gilded dial surround sits behind a convex glass in a door that hinges upward. The pendule de
Paris round movement is marked only “B&L”, which may stand for Baume & Lezard, watchmakers in Switzerland, in business since
1880. I cannot find any documentation that they sold clocks, however, and cannot find another explanation for the B&L stamp
on the back of the movement. It is a 15-day runner, striking on the hours and half-hours on a nickel bell. The pendulum
is typical French style, more commonly seen on portico clocks. No sales of a similar clock that I can find, so we’re going on
the consignor’s recommendation. $500-$1500.
