Antique American Clocks July 2021
144. $750
Howard & Davis “No. 3 Regulator”, ca. 1858. A second No. 3 from this early Howard association,
this one in better original shape than #143. The 38-inch case retains good grain painting and all three glasses are original;
the dial glass is cracked at the very top, held in by its original putty, and the throat and tablet showing noticeable lifting and
peeling on the tablet. The case is stamped “13” and so is the upper door hinge. The dial is paper, old and likely original
(all Howard & Davis dials were paper to my knowledge), clean and sharp. The hands original. The 8-day movement is
signed “Howard & Davis Boston” and also stamped “John T Fox”; there is a repair label from 1898 pasted to the weight shield with
his name and location (Rochester, NY). The weight is marked “3”, hidden in the photo by the pendulum stick. The clock
is running like a tank. There just isn’t anything wrong or unoriginal with this clock other than old age. It gets us all,
if we’re lucky. $800-$1200.
