Antique American Clocks July 2021

Silas B. Terry column & carved splat brass timepiece, ca. 1835. Terry left his father’s
employ in 1831 to make brass movement clocks such as this. There are number of examples of his clocks from this period in the
Antique Clocks Price Guide, but I cannot find one with this case design or movement. Note the diagonal mahogany door veneer
and the spiral grain-painted columns. It is presumably a one-day, time-only, driven by a thin 3.5-lb weight that is not original;
it is running nicely. The pendulum rod hangs off the inside of the front brass plate; the movement is not signed. The
wood dial shows some wear and soiling, with a large cutout to view the movement. The hands are likely original, as are both
glasses; the tablet has some losses and a crack in the lower left corner. A good card label inside typical of his clocks from
this period, which sell for $1000 and up. $500-$1000.
