E. Howard & Co. “No 21” marble-front gallery clock, ca. 1890.  The white marble dial is 24 inches in diameter with raised bronze numerals, minute markers, and matching hands.  Howard also made this model with 30- and 36-inch dials; I am thankful this is only 24 inches, as the dial alone weighs 34 lbs.  The dial was signed E Howard & Co. but the paint has worn off; you can see the “shadow” where the lettering was when you view the front at an angle.  This style of numbering and hands is not typical for this model, but identical hands and numbering were used on a marble dial clock mounted in a wooden gallery case for shelf or counter display (Fontaine’s).  The 4-inch-deep case behind the dial has been painted white and holds a signed 8-day weight-driven movement with a short pendulum and damascened bob.  The 18-lb lead weight is cleverly suspended from four brass pulleys in a compounded manner such that the weight fall is minimized.  At the bottom of the case is a small swing-lever to allow you to restart the clock if it stops or winds down; there also is an adjustment just below the ‘12’ on the dial that lets you adjust the pendulum length by turning the shaft with a screwdriver.  The gallery timepiece is running confidently.  I can’t find a recent sales record for this model, but similar Howard marble-front gallery clocks typically sell for $1500 and up (e.g., Schmitt-Horan 2020).  $1200-$1800.
