Antique American Clocks July 2021
94. $600
Spencer, Hotchkiss & Co. triple decker, 1829-1833. This group manufactured clocks
in Salem Bridge (now Naugatuck) CT with distinctive brass movements; this one is an 8-day time-and-strike repeater. The case
style is one of several used by this group, and I can find several similar examples in the Antique Clocks Price Guide. This
33.5-inch case has undergone significant restoration including painting/gilding the gesso crest, column capitols and feet; repainting
the columns, three new glasses with new period images. The wooden dial is clean, the hands correct (except the seconds hand). The brass movement is running and striking; the time cord is frayed and needs to be replaced to prevent trouble. There are square
8-day iron weights and a varnished label inside. As this is an early clock (pre-1835), restoration is hard to avoid. At
least it looks good! Horton’s sold this clock two years ago for $1600. $600-$1200.
