Antique American Clocks July 2021
77. $250
Boston-area banjo, ca. 1860. The repainted dial says E. Howard & Co. but that probably
isn’t correct. The movement is mounted to the backboard with diagonal corner screws rather than a single center screw. The movement is unsigned. The pendulum is not correct for this type of banjo, which should have a wooden stick; the bob is newer. The weight is also likely a period replacement. All three glasses are old, the dial glass may not be original. There is
some lifting (hazing) to the throat and some loss to the gilt at the bottom of the throat (and the colors are not correct for E. Howard). The period 29-inch case is clean with the grain painting very clear on the sides and bezel – this clock’s best feature. There
is some damage at the dial hinge and of course the bottom has been broken out and repaired. The clock will run for a while but
always stops and will need service. The hands are quite wrong. $250-$400.
