Antique American Clocks July 2021
76. $250
Hatch-style banjo, 1840-1870. Although the dial says Howard & Davis, this is not a
Howard & Davis banjo. The case style is North Attleboro with a rectangular box; the movement is unmarked but is of the GD
Hatch style, with a circular keystone (with an ugly repair), straight-click pawl, and is mounted to the backboard with diagonal corner
screws. The wooden pendulum stick is rounded and the bob is attached by a hook, as are Hatch pendulum sticks and bobs. The glasses are properly painted and old, possibly original. The grain painting on the 29-inch case is good, a bit dark on the
bezel. The painted zinc dial is chipping, and the name imprint has been touched up; it is evident that this dial came from another
clock, and there are multiple dial screw holes in the case. The hands are correct and the weight is period; there is no weight
shield. It is running. $250-$400.
