Antique American Clocks July 2021
66. $250
Alden Atkins hollow column triple decker, 1842-1845. Alden was a nephew to Rollin and
Irenus Atkins, but worked in clock manufacturing for only a few years, as Alden A. Atkins & Co. at Forestville CT. Although
there are only two Alden Atkins clocks listed in the Antique Clocks Price Guide, there are 11 listed on LiveAuctioneers, mostly OG’s,
but there is one very much like this one, which sold at Fontaine’s in 2015 for $350. The 28.5-inch triple-decker case is veneered
in flame mahogany, especially evident on the hollow columns. It looks great – the only chip I see is at the upper left corner
of the cornice. The dial glass is old and could be original; the mirror is obviously old, and the tablet is repainted by Tom
Moberg on old glass. The dial board is wood, perhaps an old replacement, the hands period. I believe the movement is 30-hour,
time-and-strike on a wire gong, and is unsigned; it is driven by two long round weights. It is running and striking without
issue. There is a decent label in the bottom section. Hollow column clocks are not all that common, despite the popularity
of this style. Note the two “false hollow column” clocks also listed in this auction (#7 and #10). $250-$500.
