56.      $600

Welch, Spring & Co. “Italian No. 2” calendar, ca. 1872.  A 16-inch round-top case with rosewood veneer and two original gilded half-columns on each side.  This rare example is distinguished by the original black paper calendar dial in the lower window; I can find no sales examples in the Antique Clocks Price Guide or on LiveAuctioneers, but the black calendar dial model is illustrated on page 174 of Ly’s book Welch Clocks, Second Edition.  Note the Lewis signature above the center post; B.B. Lewis made the calendar mechanism and sold it to Welch, Spring & Co.  The 8-day, time-and-strike movement is signed E.N. Welch, Forestville, CT and is running and striking as expected.  The glasses are original, the gold calendar hands as well; the time dial holds the original paint, and the hands are replacements.  There is a worn label inside.  The calendar date hand will advance when triggered by hand, but I did not run the clock long enough to see if it advances with the clock. With no sales records pricing is difficult.  $600-$1200.
