Antique American Clocks July 2021
10. $750
Forestville false hollow-column shelf clock, 1833-1855. My consignor tells me this
is a Forestville clock but there is no label, and the movement is unsigned. Jim DuBois clued me in to a sale at Schmitt’s in
2015 for $350; it was in much worse shape but was described as being “probably Forestville”. The 32.5-inch case is veneered
in mahogany with a clean and recent finish. The design of this clock is unique: the pendulum swings in front of the lower tablet
and the wafer weights fall behind the hollow columns on each side. There are two additional columns on either side of the tablet;
the tablet was painted on modern glass by Tom Moberg. There are two original mirrors in the center and cornice, and the glass
in the dial door is original; the key and latch work. The wooden dial is clean and complete. The 8-day, time-and-strike
brass movement is not signed, driven by two weights (9 and 7 lb) that don’t look original to me (the strike weight has weight added
to it). You access the weights by lifting off the cornice. It is running and striking without issue. There is no
label; I thought there might be one behind the tablet, but as you can see, no luck. There is a spot of broken/missing veneer
on the upper surface of the base. This is a very rare clock. $750-$1200.
