Antique American Clocks July 2021
8. $500
Munger & Benedict two-door shelf clock, 1831-1837. A 40-inch case veneered
in mahogany on the front, but the sides and wood behind the columns are not veneered and may have been more darkly stained than they
are now. The case has been refinished and the veneered portions around the doors are glossy. The dial glass is old and
wavy, has been out of the door and has been repainted nicely. The mirror is old but not period; I think the splat is original,
and the columns (but not the capitals) have likely been repainted. It stands on claw front feet and newer turned back feet;
the glass doorknobs are appropriate and possibly original. The inside has the original wallpaper in reasonable shape with a
nice label. The metal dial bears the original paint and signature print, with proper hands. It is attached by three pinned
posts to the unsigned 8-day time-and-strike movement, numbered 211, that is typically associated with these models. There are
no weights with the clock; it needs approximately 8 lb weights that are no thicker than 2 inches; long round weights are probably
best (I do not have an appropriate set). I could not get it running with make-do weights, so it may need additional adjustment. The eagle pendulum is original (note how the rating wire goes through the cast eagle with a rating nut on the bottom). The pulleys
are replacements. This clock last sold at RO Schmitt’s in 2014 for $700. It had a different upper glass. $500-$800.
