Antique American Clocks January 2021
139. $100
E. N. Welch Mfg. Co. “Verdi”, ca. 1889. A second, later version of the Verdi, this one made
by the Welch Mfg. Company after they bought out Welch, Spring & Co. in 1884 (Welch, Spring & Co. was an offshoot of Welch
Mfg. Co. making a premium line of clocks, including Gale calendar clocks). The rosewood veneer on this example is outstanding,
with a clear finish. The dial glass is new and the dial has been repainted, the lower glass is old and the “Regulator” decal
an improper addition that can easily be removed with a razor blade. The hands are correct and include a seconds hand. The 8-day, time-and-strike movement is unsigned but correct to this model; it was designed by B.B. Lewis for Welch and is highly regarded
(see Ly, Welch Clocks, Second Edition, page 284). It strikes the hours on a cathedral gong and the half-hours on a brass bell. There is a Verdi label on the back. $100-$175.
