Antique American Clocks January 2021

Seth Thomas “Column Shell”, ca. 1863. This is an early example of this model, made before
Plymouth Hollow was renamed Thomaston in 1865. Thomas made this model in many styles, all 32 inches tall with two doors and
three glasses. Here we have a shell pattern on the half-columns with gilt capitals and plinths and three period glasses – notably,
both tablets appear to be period. The rosewood veneer is in excellent shape with some chipping and missing pieces on the left
side of the base; there is some separation of the cornice at the top left. The contoured painted metal dial shows some soiling
but no chipping. The 8-day time-and-strike lyre movement is signed Plymouth Hollow and is running, but I did not check the strike
side as the weight hook is missing. There is half a label inside, but enough to show the Plymouth Hollow origin. This
clock comes without weights or a pendulum bob; weights that will work in this clock can be found in Parts, #902, and purchased at
the listed price. A very nice early example. $150-$300.
