Antique American Clocks January 2021

English tall case clock, ca. 1820? An eye-catching 85-inch oak and mixed
wood case (90 inches tall with the old brass finial) from Wm Wainwright of Leicester (signed on the dial). The case has been
cleaned and refinished; the darker wood inlays contrast nicely with the lighter oak and are further outlined by satinwood line inlays. The polychrome metal dial shows scenes of pastoral England in the corners and on the top arch; there is some loss of lettering and
light staining on the dial. The brass hands are likely replacements. The dial is a good match to the hood, but I wouldn’t
guarantee that they have always been together, as movements and cases frequently recombine. This is a one-day pull-up movement,
time-and-strike with calendar; it is running and striking but the minute hand sticks occasionally. There is a smaller weight
on the strike side to slow the strike. The dial glass is new. Horton’s sold this clock in 2014 for $975. $500-$1000.
