Antique American Clocks July 2020
153. $100
Erastus Yates shelf clock, ca. 1840. Yates made clocks in Butternuts NY (now Morris), obtaining
Torrington movements from Erastus Hodges or standard wooden movements from Chauncey Boardman. This one contains a Torrington
(east-west) movement and is running and striking with the two old 30-hour weights. His few known cases are all like this one,
although this one is missing the chimneys and splat (the top board has also been replaced). The full-length door latches on
the right; the case is 26.5 inches tall. The two half-columns have been repainted and crudely restenciled, the mirror is old
but may not be original, and the upper glass is a recent replacement. The wooden dial is original, with some fading; the minute
hand has been repaired incorrectly. There are no sales of Yates clocks in the Antique Clocks Price Guide or onLiveAuctioneers. There is a nice discussion of Yates in An Empire in Time by G. Russell Oechsle et al. $100-$250.
