Antique American Clocks January 2020
409. $175
French portico and shelf, ca. 1890. This inlaid rosewood portico stands 18 inches high without the 2.5-inch
stand. There are inlaid vines and flowers on the front and top of the base, with lines on the top, sides, and columns,
the latter mounted between turned brass capitols. The machine-turned silver dial is dark but a name and location (Amsterdam)
can be read at the bottom behind moon hands, in a machine-turned brass bezel. The temperature-adjusting pendulum is quite ornate;
the unsigned 8-day movement strikes a nickel bell on the hours and half-hours. It is running and striking. Much of the
wood is quite light in color, and the base is not original to the clock, although it matches well. It is designed to hold a
square glass dome, and still could. It has a shrinkage crack across the surface and inlaid vining and flowers on the front. $250-$400.
