Antique American Clocks January 2020
91. $3000
E. Howard “No. 58-8 Regulator”, ca. 1900. This is the smallest and most common
of the three sizes of this model, at 40 inches long with an 8-inch dial. The walnut case has a great finish, no nicks, scratches,
or missing parts, although there is a crack in the base at the bottom right where a large chip was broken off and reattached. The dial glass is likely original, the door glass is newer; the back left top finial has been replaced and is slightly off in shape. The painted metal dial shows enough wear to be original, as are the hands. The time only, 8-day movement is signed “E Howard
& Co., Boston” with the number 5, and is running reliably. There is a silvered pendulum stick (probably repainted), a damascened
nickel bob, and a number 5 weight running behind the walnut weight shield. The nickel pendulum tie-down is present and functional. The door key doesn’t seem to operate the lock (possibly, the key operator is incompetent). I’m having a hard time parting with
this clock. Prices for this model have been ranging from $3000 to $4500 of late.
