Barnes, Bartholomew & Co. 8-day shelf clock, 1833-1836.  An early brass-strap movement from this short-lived firm in Bristol, CT.  The mahogany-veneered triple-decker case is 35.5 inches tall with a carved fruit basket splat, painted tortoise-shell columns with gilded capitols, an original mirror in the middle and the remnants of an eglomise tablet in the bottom door.  The case shows overall wear with missing veneer on the side edges and nicks and touch-ups to the columns.  It appears there should be finials (pineapples?) on the chimney caps, although the dowel holes have been filled. The wooden dial board is soiled but still sharp.  The hands are likely replacements.  The mirror is in nice shape, and certainly old if not original.  The dial glass is original with original putty, but much of the putty has cracked out.  The unsigned early (note the gear wheels) movement will run for a short while but the anchor escapement needs adjustment; the suspension spring is torn and ready to be replaced before or after it breaks.  It strikes an old iron bell.  Two old weights and a very dark and partial label, but enough to identify the makers.  With a replaced/repainted tablet this would be a pretty nice clock. Sale prices for this style of clock run around $250.  $200-$400.
