Antique American Clocks January 2020
19. $150
Waterbury “Oxford”, ca. 1883. This is the early version of the Oxford, with a unique
top-piece and finials. Later versions were more like the mirrorsides of other makers (see Ly Waterbury Clocks & Watches,
page 411). Note the all-wood base (no metal ornament in the middle) with no grain-painted trim; the 23.5-inch walnut case has
been nicely refinished. The finials may be replacements but are the proper style. The old door glass is cracked across
the middle, the stencil worn on the left. The side mirrors show considerable spotting with loss of mirror finish, and the old
putti statues lack the gilt finish. There is a signed paper dial and correct hands, with an alarm (untested). The Waterbury
8-day movement is running and striking the hours on a wire gong. The pendulum is appropriate. There are two nice labels
on the back, one of which describes how this movement allows you to move the hands forward or backward to adjust the time. I
don’t think you can beat that. $200-$300.
