193. $650
E.N. Welch “Regulator G”, ca. 1885. A relatively rare regulator from Welch, at 51 inches in cherry, or possibly mahogany, in a very old finish and plenty of patina. The door glass is period/original, the dial is in a machined brass bezel and is worn paper, signed above the mainstem. The hands are replacements. The A-frame movement is not signed and is not the brass plate movement used in many Welch regulators, but it is a double-weight, time-only 8-day movement, and so may have been used in later models; it is running without issue. I do not see any evidence that it is a replacement. The pendulum stick is likely original and has a large, heavy machined bob. There is no evidence of a label. AAC sold an oak Regulator G in 2021 for $732. $650–$800.
John Quill has informed me that this is NOT a Regulator G, but is in fact a Waterbury
"Rosedale". The Rosedale (Regulator No. 4 ) is shown on page 714 of Ly's second volume on Waterbury clocks; the case is identical
to the Welch Regulator G. Proof of manufacture is gained by the A-frame movement, a Waterbury movement also used in #194 (the
following clock). Moreover, Welch did not sign their dials, so the dial signature is spurious. The previous regulator
G noted above and sold by AAC has a different movement. The Rosedale is just as rare as the Regulator G. Thanks,
John, for straightening me out!
