Ansonia Clock Co. “Superba and La Vague”, ca. 1904. The
best example of this model you’ll ever find. This piece, along with several other figurals and porcelains in this auction came
from the Lyle and Donna Segelberg collection; you will find many pictures of their clocks in Ly’s Ansonia Clocks & Watches. Superba is the base, with the statue La Vague. La Vague means “the wave” in French, and you can see the wave rising behind the
figure. This is a popular depiction in French sculpture, although I could not find a matching example, so I don’t know that
this figural is based on a known sculpture. The vine covered base has Brazilian onyx insets and onyx half-globes on each side. Both pieces have been professionally refinished; together they stand 28.5 inches tall. The flat dial glass is beveled, the dial
porcelain, with proper hands. The Ansonia round 8-day, time and half-hour strike movement is running and striking on a cathedral
gong. I see no damage or losses to either piece. This model is pictured in Ly’s book on Ansonia clocks on page 381; I
can find but one other sales example, at RO Schmitt’s in 2017 for $1200. It had not been refinished and was in rough condition. A rare and beautiful art nouveau example. $1500–$2000.
