E.N. Welch Mfg. Co. “Cabinet No. 3”, ca. 1886. Welch put
their high-end Patti movement (distinguished by its small size and “x-shaped” brass frame) into a variety of shelf and cabinet clocks,
both with and without visible escapements; this is one of the less common models. The mahogany case is 17.75 inches tall with
gilded incising on the front; the finish is clean, polished, and likely original. The two-part porcelain dial sits behind a
beveled glass; there are some minor hairlines and chips at the rate adjustment arbor. The visible escapement has ruby pallets,
and the hands are correct and as shown in the example in Welch Clocks, Second Edition (Tran Duy Ly) on page 342. The signed
Patti movement is running and striking on the hours and half-hours on a cathedral gong. There is a label on the back of the
door on back. Only one sale on LiveAuctioneers, in 2022 at Schmitt Horan for $225. $200–$400.
