193.           $1000

Joseph Chadwick New Hampshire mirror clock, ca. 1825. Chadwick was also in Boscawen, NH making mirror clocks; he was married to Ben Morrill’s sister.  It appears he moved on to another profession in 1831.  The 30-inch-long case has a simple beveled front with mahogany veneer on the front and sides.  The cracked dial glass is original with the original dial surround, flaking but still serviceable; the mirror is an old replacement. The dial and hands are original; the paint may be original, the signature has been strengthened.  The unsigned  and unusual brass movement is an 8-day, time-and-strike with the bell over the movement and is driven by two standard 8-day (8 lb) weights. It is running and striking.  There is an unusual pulley system to compound the weights, a period pendulum, and a jeweler’s sales/repair label from New Hampshire.  Of the four Chadwick clocks on LiveAuctioneers, only one appears to have maker’s label.  Note the penciled signatures on the back of the door – it appears that this clock was owned by the Morrill family until the late 1800’s.  As noted, the Morrills and Chadwicks were related by marriage.  This clock sold last year for $1050.  $1000–$1200.
