190.           $2500

Samuel Abbott New Hampshire mirror clock, ca. 1825.  Mr. Abbott’s clocks are distinguished by their grand piano-shaped movements and the flat iron weights on rods, as found here.  This example is 41 inches tall in very original condition.  This gilding is very worn, the black paint on the columns is original, and the four brass medallions are original.  The dial glass is original but the dial surround is flaking.  The mirror is certainly original, and the center section has peeled off, with the backboard showing through.  The painted metal dial is probably not original, and has been repainted and retouched extensively, including the numerals.  The hands are period but not typical. The escape wheel shaft on the 8-day, time-only movement has jumped out of its rear pivot and will need to be reset; the pendulum rod, bob, and weight are original.  The interior is sooty, but the label is readable and spells Abbot with one ‘t’.  These clocks are highly sought and do not come up for sale often; the most recent sale I can find was at Cottone’s in 2017 for $3000.  This clock must have been gorgeous back in the day.  $2500–$3000.
