E.N. Welch Clock Co. ripple-front round gothic
(beehive), ca. 1858. A 19-inch case with rosewood veneer and ripple trim and a clean finish. Both glasses appear to be
original, with the original putty around the dial glass. The milk glass tablet shows considerable wear and loss. The dial
holds the original paint with some touch-up and is signed JC Brown, Bristol CT US. Some filled holes in the dial surround raise
the possibility of a different dial in place at one time, but this dial is certainly a match to this clock. The hands are period
and correct. The 8-day, time-and-strike movement is signed EN Welch, and the green label is a Welch label. It is very
dark, and behind plastic. The likelihood here is that this clock was obtained by Welch when the company took over the bankrupt
JC Brown company in 1857. The clock is running and striking as expected. Ripple-front beehives are currently selling for
around $500. $400–$600.
