Hills, Goodrich
& Co. hollow column, 1841-1845. A beautiful 28-inch mahogany case with old glasses and a polished finish. I cannot
be sure any of the glasses haven’t been changed out, as the putty is old but not necessarily original. The center tablet is
interesting, somewhat primitive/folk arty, but I have found several other clocks by these makers with similar tablets. If not
original it certainly is old, and charming. The lower mirror is typical of this model and looks original. The contoured
metal dial has been touched up extensively, with strengthening of the numerals and spandrels; the hands are period/original and have
been painted. The 8-day, time-and-strike brass movement is unsigned; it is running and striking, driven by two proper round
weights that run down the columns. The cathedral gong and mount are replacements (the old mount position is visible). There is a good label inside. Note the double pulleys on the top of the case, and the later-made dust cover. AAC sold
a similar example last January for $325. $300–$400.
