23.                   $1000

Pennsylvanian pillar & scroll with brass and wood movement, ca. 1830.  A 31-inch pillar & scroll-style case that would appear to be of eastern Pennsylvania origin, incorporating a New England aesthetic and Pennsylvania German manufacturing.  The case is sturdily made with mahogany or cherry veneer, a clean finish, and original finials; the right scroll has been repaired.  Note the turned feet in front and back.  The glasses are old but the putty has been replaced; the lower glass covers a painted iron plate that depicts a story or incident that I do not know.  The painted dial is iron as well, with colorful spiral shell spandrels and thick brass hands.  The movement is brass and steel, like a tall-case movement from the early 1800’s, but it is mounted between two wooden plates, reminiscent of early American clocks and early Black Forest wooden slat movements, with brass bushings.  It is time-and-strike, running 1 day; the weights are not original.  The strike does not shut off and will need slight adjustment; the time side is running without issue.  It strikes on an iron bell, mounted on the back wall as in early American wooden works clocks.  There is no label, and no evidence of a label, and no signature on the movement.  You can find several similar examples on LiveAuctioneers if you search for Pennsylvanian pillar & scroll clock, selling for from $900 to $6500.  Distin & Bishop, The American Clock, show and discuss several similar eastern Pennsylvanian pillar & scrolls on page 117.  $1000–$2000.
