172.           $900

Forestville Manufacturing Co. ripple-front, four-post sharp gothic (onion top), 1842-1849.  A 20-inch case with rosewood veneer and ripple molding on the edges and door frame.  There are two posts on each side, the finials retain their tips, although the left rear finial looks like a replacement.  The finish is old.  The dial glass is original, with the original putty; the frosted, cut-glass tablet is period and typical for this model. The metal dial holds very old paint, with some chipping, fading and discoloration; the JC Brown signature is evident in angled light at the top of the dial.  The hands are period.  The 8-day, time-and-strike movement is signed “Forestville M.F.G. Co., Bristol, CT, U.S.A.” and is running and striking on a wire gong.  There is a very dark but legible label behind plastic on the back wall. One sale in 2022 at White’s Auction for $11oo; Schmidt’s Antiques sold one for the same in 2021.  $900-$1200.
