166.           $250

Brewster & Ingrahams steeple with Kirk’s backplate, 1843-1852. Brewster bought Charles Kirk’s factory in Bristol CT in 1833 and hired Kirk to run it (Brewster was trained in textiles); he brought on Andrew and Elias Ingraham in 1843.  This clock was probably made early by that firm and housed the brass springs in cast iron cups on Kirk’s patent iron backplate, but likely came after the rack and snail strike movement used in #165.  The 20-inch case is veneered in mahogany, no chips or repairs evident, with two period/original glasses, including an interesting, frosted glass tablet. The painted dial is likely original and bears a faint signature of the makers below the opening; the hands are also likely original. The unsigned 30-hour, time-and-strike movement is running and striking.  There is a good but dark label inside behind plastic. $250-$600.
