Hills, Goodrich & Co. hollow column shelf clock, 1841-1845. A 28.25-inch case with a clean finish over mahogany veneer. There are some veneer chips on the edges. The dial glass and
middle tablet are original; the tablet has been touched up and rebacked but is in excellent condition. The lower mirror is old
but probably a replacement, as it is not held in place with putty; mirrors are typically found in this door in other examples. The contoured metal dial is likely original, with some chipping and fading of the color; the hands are typical. Note that the
winding ports are above the mainstem; this company used two different movements with this case: one upside-down movement, and one
with the winding arbors below the mainstem, as found in most other clocks. Of the five clocks on LiveAuctioneers, two have the
winding ports above the mainstem, as found here. The 30-hour brass, time-and-strike movement is unsigned; it will run but the
lift arms on the strike side are out of place and will need adjustment. This clock does not come with weights, which should
be cylinder weights that will fit in the columns. I tested the clock with standard 30-hour weights, but they will not fit in
the columns, and I do not have any suitable weights. There is a nearly complete label inside with some darkening, but the essential
information is legible. The most recent sale of this model was in 2021 for $375 at Forsythe Auction. $325-$400.
