148. $100
S. Nation & Bro. column & cornice, ca. 1871. The
clock was most likely made by the Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Co. and is shown in a catalog illustration from 1891 (“Column Weight”, page
309, Ly, Gilbert Clocks). The label has an overpaste for the retailer, S. Nation & Bro. in Springfield, MO. The movement
is unmarked, but the gong base is a Gilbert style. The case is 25 inches tall, veneered in rosewood with tortoise shell columns
and repainted capitols, an original lower glass and tablet, and a modern upper glass. The tablet is quite nice, an image of
a Chinese gentleman and a child; the black backing has been mostly lost but could be easily replaced. The painted metal dial
shows considerable flaking, the hands are likely original. The 30-hour time-and-strike, weight-driven movement is running and
striking; there is a good label on the backwall with the retailer overpaste. $100-$200.
