Birge, Mallory & Co. Patent Brass Eight Day Clock, 1838-1843. A 37-inch case with dark mahogany veneer; there are some noticeable veneer repairs to the bottom edge of the lower door, and some chips on the bottom sides.  The gesso eagle on top has had some repairs and some peculiar painting to the splat.  All three glasses appear to be original, with some new putty on the dial glass and modest losses to the lower tablet.  The capitals and plinths have the original gilding, the columns also look to be original.  The dial is very clean with good gold leafing; the hands are period.  The strap brass movement is stamped “BM&Co”; it runs for a few minutes.  The strike lift arms are out of alignment and the strike does not stop once started.  That can be fixed.  The weights are proper BM&Co weights, the pendulum bob is period, and there is a good label inside.  AAC sold a similar example with repainted columns and tablets two years ago for $200.  $200-$300.
