140.           $200

John Birge Patent Brass Eight Day Clock, 1830-1831.  Mr. Birge was involved in many clock-making businesses from 1820 to 1855, when he retired to be a farmer; he fought in the War of 1812 before he started clockmaking.  He was closely associated with Joseph Ives, having rescued him from debtor’s prison.  This case is 37 inches tall with an old dial glass (but newer putty), an old mirror in the middle (but not necessarily original) and a new glass in the bottom door with a lovely tablet painted by Irene B Worthy in 1988.  The dial is extensively gilded and has been touched up extensively as well.  There should be a pull-up mirror behind the dial; the hands are period/original. The strap-brass 8-day, time-and-strike movement is running and striking without issue; note the pewter drums.  There is a good label on the backwall.  This clock does not come with weights, but weights can be purchased for $50 – put a note on your bid sheet that you want weights.  $200-$400.
