Eli Terry & Sons pillar & scroll, 1823-1831. A
pillar & scroll by the master and his sons, Eli Jr. and Henry. Junior left in 1831 to form his own firm; Henry and his dad
continued for a year or so as E. Terry & Son, and then Dad retired, and Henry took over under his own name “at the old manufactory”. Like all Villet-restored clocks, the 28-inch case is clean, the glasses old, and the movement runs and strikes. Here the scroll-top
may be a replacement and the putty has been replaced on the glasses. The brass urn finials are solid on wooden posts, the tablet
is a repaint. The wooden dial is clean with some loss of decoration below the mainstem; note the American-style shields in the
corners. The numbering may have been strengthened; the hands are correct to style but the minute hand looks short. The
30-hour, time-and-strike wooden movement is running, driven by two old weights. A good label. $400-$600.
