109.           $400

Seth Thomas pillar & scroll, 1818-1827.  Mr. Thomas went into business on his own in 1814, having left his partnership with Silas Hoadley in 1813.  He purchased the right to manufacture Eli Terry’s Patent Shelf Clock in 1818, but by 1822 a dispute developed between Terry and Thomas, and by 1827 a lawsuit by Terry convinced Thomas to put a patent acknowledgement on his labels.  This clock does not acknowledge the Terry patent, and so was likely made before 1827.  The case has a beautiful finish, no veneer chips or repairs that I see, other than to the two scroll tops. The brass urn finials on steel posts are correct for Seth Thomas.  Both glasses are original, the tablet repainted very nicely in the door some time ago.  The dial is colorful and clean, the hands period.  The 30-hour, time-and-strike wooden movement runs briefly and strikes; there are two old weights and a good label.  There are new pully dust covers on top and a new tin sheet over the movement.  Another wonderful Villet restoration.  $400-$600.
